The Art of Reading: An integrative approach
Reading is a purposeful thing. One can read for the experience which is timeless, or one can read for information. A timeless experience borders the realm of enjoyment of Art. Reading for information has a means and ends. This framework aims to explore the Art of Reading and its many layers. When we read we should always know why we are reading as it allows for a better experience.
The many layers of Reading
The layers of reading are for information, for poetics, and for narrative. Reading for information is a task of trying to understand the contents of a piece of writing and the many objects that it aims to talk about. Reading for Poetics is simply reading for the enjoyment that words brings and the many worlds that it allows us to experience. Reading for Narrative is much more conscious task that is an extension of reading for poetics. Ideally if you read without a consideration of time, information, understanding of poetics and narrative comes naturally. However when reading for an understanding of these realms, a conscious effort must be made to identify the essence of these realms. This goes back to understanding names and shapes of things. So in essence, we can find the names and shapes of information, poetics, and narratives. So to conclude reading is a conscious effort if we seek to understand these realms.
